About the Property

The Nook of the Woods is a retreat center focused on connecting with nature and yourself. It is located in the North Carolina Brushy Mountains.

Our 40 acres is home to  white-tailed deer, foxes, black bears, rabbits, and numerous bird species. You’ll find tulip poplar, oak, maple, cherry, white pine to name just a few. Edible wild mushrooms include chanterelle, oyster and cauliflower with cultivated shitake, chicken of  the woods and lion’s mane available at times.  Our own pond-raised catfish will sometimes appear at the dinner table. Rooms at the Nook are named after just a few of the native species of flower found on the property.

The residents of the property strive to live sustainably off the land. Every summer, you’ll find our garden is full of herbs and a large variety of vegetables (which we include in our meals).

Tom bought this land in 1995 and has hand-built many of the residencies here. He values meals together and learning from each other about this grand adventure we call life.

Our gallery below features some of the buildings and natural scenery you’ll see here.
